Corruption is conventionally understood as the misuse of entrusted power for private or personal gain. It involves behavior on the part of officials in the public and private sector, whether civil servants or politicians, in which they improperly and unlawfully enrich themselves, or those close to them, or induce them to do so by misusing the position in which they are placed. Corruption falls broadly into two categories: “political” or “grand” corruption and “bureaucratic” or “petty” corruption (sometimes referred to as survival corruption). |
